Google and partners roll out SI tuberculosis screening from X-rays: Nexus AI reviewed 25,000 images at 40 facilities, with results in under 45 seconds

SI helps find tuberculosis from an image in seconds where results used to take weeks — though for now the figures come from Google itself.

Google Research described a program in which the company's models help detect tuberculosis (which, according to the blog, kills about 1.23 million people a year). South African medical company Nexus AI uses chest X-ray analysis algorithms and Google models: MedSigLIP, MedGemma and HeAR — the last trained on more than 300 million audio segments and used for cough-based screening. According to the blog, Nexus AI reviewed more than 25,000 radiographs at 40 facilities, turnaround dropped from weeks to under 45 seconds, and more than 3,000 free screenings were carried out at under-resourced clinics. The solution operates in South Africa, Sierra Leone and Côte d'Ivoire and is expanding to the DR Congo, Zambia and Cameroon; Indonesia, per the text, is aiming for 50 million screenings a year. The system has CE MDR Class IIb certification and ISO 13485 compliance, and the WHO prequalification process has begun. All figures come from Google's blog.
