Canva releases Craft, its first in-house image model: it plans the layout and text first, then draws

Design from a prompt is getting closer to a finished layout that can be edited in parts.

The two-stage model first builds a plan from the prompt — placement of elements, scale, visual hierarchy and data for the text — and then generates an image at up to 2K resolution in 30 aspect ratios. It was trained on templates from Canva's library (posters, social posts, presentations, infographics, menus) rather than on photographs, so the result can be turned into a layered design and individual elements edited without touching the rest. It is available to all users in the Dream Lab tab and through the Canva API; it will come to chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini via Canva's MCP (TechCrunch). Lighter versions, Craftfast and Craft-ultrafast, are in development.
