Hugging Face releases Carbon-X, an open 14.8-billion-parameter model that answers questions about DNA sequences in plain language

An open model you can "talk" to about DNA has appeared, but it is not intended for medical decisions.

The model is built on Alibaba's Qwen3-14B and further trained on about 302 billion tokens of DNA, English text and biology material; it was developed with researchers at the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine in Italy, the University of Naples Federico II and China's Zhongguancun Academy. The user pastes in a sequence, asks a question and gets an answer with an explanation: an estimate of how likely a mutation is to be harmful, as well as new sequences for gene therapy research. Hugging Face reports 66.7% on its own tests versus 67.5% for OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol; the license is Apache 2.0 and, according to The Next Web, it runs on a single 80 GB graphics card. The model description says it has not been clinically validated and should not be used for medical decisions.
