Google's SI reads a "blind" ultrasound by an untrained worker and gets gestational age to within 4.18 days — as good as experts

Gestational age can be determined accurately without a sonographer — this brings prenatal care closer to places without specialists.

The model interprets a "blind sweep" scan — a standard scan with a portable Clarius C3 probe performed by a minimally trained worker. Training used 1,968 participants from North Carolina and Zambia, fine-tuning 120 participants in Chicago; prospective testing was in Chicago (192 participants) and Nairobi (193). Mean absolute error in gestational age is 4.18 days versus 4.48 days for expert sonographers; in Nairobi it is 4.27 days without local fine-tuning. The work was published in JAMA Network Open, according to the Google Research blog.
