Nvidia and the University of Washington's Institute for Protein Design release RFD4-Proteina, an open model for designing proteins across tasks

A protein design tool is becoming open and available in clouds and labs; how well its designs work in the test tube will be shown by experiments.

RFD4-Proteina is an open model built by Nvidia together with the University of Washington's Institute for Protein Design (UW Medicine). According to Databricks, it generates both the amino-acid sequence and the full atomic structure of a protein in a single pass, and reward-guided search can steer a design toward desired properties such as thermostability or binding; there are ready-made workflows for antibodies and vaccines. According to Nvidia, on four benchmark suites (protein binding, small-molecule binding, enzyme scaffolding and DNA binding) the model showed a higher rate of successful computational designs and higher generation throughput than the baselines it was compared with. The model is available through partners including Hugging Face, Google Cloud, Databricks, Benchling, Anthropic's Claude Science and OpenAI. Genedata and Danaher will use it in an autonomous lab where experimental results guide the next design cycle.
