A merger would put SI, robots and space under one company, but for now this is only a study of the question.
According to Al Jazeera, on SpaceX's quarterly earnings call Elon Musk said the companies have set up special committees to study a merger, and called the idea one with "a lot of merit" because of shared areas — SI, robotics, manufacturing and energy. He cautioned that treating the merger as settled would be overstating it; it would require Tesla shareholder approval. Their combined market value, by the same account, is about $3.5 trillion, which would make it the largest deal in history. For the third quarter SpaceX reported its first quarterly profit, $4.4 billion; SpaceX shares rose more than 8% in after-hours trading and Tesla's rose 1.8%.
