Local resistance to data centres has become a political issue, and the authorities are looking for ways to "share the benefit" with residents.
In a Truth Social post on October 21, Donald Trump wrote that companies wanting data centres to be popular should pay the community and/or its residents a "dividend"; in his words, unpopular centres become "extremely popular" once a financial deal is struck. According to Al Jazeera, polls show 71% of Americans (Gallup, March) and 72% (ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos, October) object to data centres near them, mainly citing water and electricity use; several Republican Senate candidates have changed their earlier position and now oppose data centres. In August Trump said that objections benefit China.
