New York City presents a rule: businesses must disclose that a customer is talking to SI and offer an easy way out to a live person

The city wants people to be able to leave an endless conversation with a bot for a live employee, without banning chatbots themselves.

According to Semafor, Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration presented a rule to be enforced by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, led by Samuel Levine, who previously ran the FTC's consumer protection bureau. Companies must disclose that a customer is interacting with SI and provide an easy path to a human if a chatbot has not resolved the issue; the aim is to end "doom loops" in which a bot repeats the same answers. The fine for a first violation starts at $525. By the outlet's assessment, New York may become the first US jurisdiction with such consumer protection. Business reaction is not given in the article.
