Former DeepMind researcher Thore Graepel launches Metis Reasoning lab in London, betting on verifiable reasoning rather than scaling alone

Another approach to SI has appeared that wants a machine's reasoning to be checkable, but for now it is only a plan.
According to The Next Web, Graepel, who took part in creating AlphaGo, left Google DeepMind in summer 2026 and founded the lab with three co-founders; it has 12 people in London, Singapore and Los Angeles. Their white paper says there are problems that "no amount of scaling can solve": hallucinations, unauditable reasoning and knowledge hidden in weights; they are building systems with an explicit, auditable record of reasoning steps. Co-founder Piers Ingram said the company has raised "more than adequately" but did not confirm reports of tens of millions. The white paper describes a method, and "encouraging" results are stated only verbally.
