Disputes over whether models may be trained on news without a licence have reached another country, and there is no answer yet.
According to MobileSyrup, the suit was filed on October 6 in the Ontario Superior Court. The plaintiffs allege that Anthropic copied their materials without a licence to train Claude, circumvented technical protection measures and violated the websites' terms of use; the statement of claim says the company "capitalized on the commercial success of its models" without holding a licence. The same publishers, per the same source, have been suing OpenAI since 2024 - the case is unresolved. Anthropic's position was not found in the sources checked.
