The struggle over SI technology is also fought through courts and sanctions: those linked to the theft of secrets are now punished too.
According to UPI, the US State Department announced sanctions on Monday under the Protecting American Intellectual Property Act (PAIPA, 2022): an asset freeze, restrictions on loans, some currency and banking transactions, and American investment. They hit companies linked to former Google engineer Linwei Ding, who was convicted in January on seven counts of trade secret theft, in particular Shanghai Zhisuan Technology and the incubator MiraclePlus. According to court documents, he stole thousands of pages of data on Google's SI infrastructure, including details of tensor processing units (TPUs), and in September received about a year in prison. China's position is not given in the materials read.
