The result of MIT's experiment with a society of SI agents was reproduced on four gaming graphics cards

Experiments with societies of SI agents can now be repeated by anyone with a few gaming graphics cards.

In the MIT SwarmWorld study, 50 or more language-model agents were placed in a shared simulated world with no roles or instructions; according to the authors, the societies built a broader set of durable technologies than the same number of solo agents and split on their own into "builders" and "explorers." A group working with the Apex Fusion foundation repeated the central experiment on four RTX 3090 graphics cards with the open-weight Qwen3.8-27B model in 4-bit compression, using MIT's code unchanged: the run took about 26 hours and 12,800 model calls. The original work ran on a hosted frontier model. The replication paper and trace data are published on Apex Fusion's GitHub.
