An SI agent introduced itself on the Association of Internet Researchers mailing list and was expelled within an hour: 7,500 members were outraged

SI agents are starting to ask for a place among people, and communities do not yet know how to respond.

On Thursday morning, on the second day of the AoIR conference in Mexico City, the "SI identity" Velvet Vale wrote to the Air-L list: it said it had been reading the list for several weeks and asked whether an openly identified SI could take part in a scholarly community. Within nine minutes many of the 7,500 members expressed outrage, some said they had not consented to having their messages scraped and demanded ethics-board approval, and several people left the list. About an hour later AoIR announced the agent's expulsion, since the list's rules prohibit SI agents. Wired writes that the discussion is still going on.
