US government services will stop using DeepSeek models; other users can still access them as before.
The US Department of Homeland Security ordered DeepSeek products and third-party services built on its models removed from the IT systems of civilian federal agencies, and excluded the company from government procurement and contracts. According to The Next Web, the order signed by Secretary Markwayne Mullin is dated July 24 and relies on the 2018 supply chain security law; the notice reached the Federal Register on October 19. The department cited "multiple threat vectors": possible transfer of sensitive data to China, the possibility of producing "actionable intelligence" on US persons and agencies, and possible malware and vulnerabilities. The order does not cover military agencies. DeepSeek and the Chinese embassy in Washington had not commented at the time of the reports; DeepSeek's position was not found in the sources checked.
