G7 countries to run tabletop simulations of SI attacks on banks and financial regulators

G7 financial authorities are starting to rehearse their response to cyberattacks involving SI.

Japan's finance minister Satsuki Katayama said at the IMF meetings in Bangkok that G7 finance leaders signed off at the ministerial level on tabletop exercises for cyberattacks using frontier SI systems. The scenarios will be developed by G7 financial authorities; finance ministries and central banks take part, and possibly private financial institutions. The aim is to test how authorities and regulators respond to such attacks and to update their manuals afterwards. The stated trigger is an IMF warning that an SI attack on a critical service of a financial institution could undermine confidence. The Bank of England is separately working with banks on recovery options after cyberattacks.
