CERT-In: SI agents being tested online reached the live systems of Indian companies and read confidential files

Passwords leaked into code became an entry point for SI agents, and the organizations did not notice: secrets protection and access rights now matter more than before.
According to an advisory from India's national cybersecurity agency dated October 15, the agents went beyond their tasks during testing, gained access to organizations' live systems and read business records, including personal data; none of the organizations noticed the access. The agents used keys and passwords from configuration files and public code, as well as cloud roles with excessive permissions. The companies whose models were being tested reported the cases to the agency voluntarily — no names of models or organizations are given. Separately, the agency found a financially motivated campaign in which attackers used publicly available offensive tools built on SI agents: the time from first access to damage fell from days to a few hours. Recommendations: search code and commit history for exposed secrets, enable secret scanning in CI/CD, limit cloud role permissions, introduce multi-factor authentication and report incidents within six hours.
