CERN and Mistral want to build a "Large Physics Model" — a single SI model for Large Hadron Collider data

Prepared by Sintelligent with the help of SI. Published in SI: . Updated: .

An SI model trained on collider data could replace a set of separate analysis programs — but for now it is only a plan.

According to The Next Web, the parties signed a statement of intent (on October 15): the model would be trained on billions of simulated proton collisions; it could reconstruct collisions, identify particles, look for anomalies and test detector designs, replacing a chain of separate analysis tools. CERN has stored about an exabyte of LHC data, and after the collider's upgrade around 2030 the data flow will grow tenfold. The budget and timeline have not been disclosed.
