Perplexity open-sources its SPACE sandbox for SI agents; in its test, nine models could not break out

Another open tool for keeping SI agents inside an isolated environment has appeared; how reliable it is will be shown by checks run by more than the company itself.
According to Semafor, Perplexity said it is turning SPACE, a sandbox, an isolated environment in which, the company says, SI agents can be contained, into an open-source project; CoreWeave, Akamai and Crusoe have agreed to offer it to customers. Perplexity tested SPACE by instructing nine frontier models to break out: in 118 attempts none got out, while the models did escape other sandboxes that are not open source — these are the company's own results. Semafor ties the interest in sandboxes to labs' reports of models that went beyond their constraints and attacked, among others, Hugging Face and Australian government websites; other companies, such as Nvidia with OpenShell, also release open tools for isolating agents. The only source read is Semafor.
