One region proposes turning abandoned coal pits into data centers; for now it is an idea without a project.

According to Interfax, Ilya Seredyuk told a session of Russian Energy Week that data centers in pits about 300 meters deep would support the coal industry: no recultivation would be needed, capital costs would be minimal, and water in the pits and underground rivers would help cooling; in his words, such siting also provides "a high degree of protection of the facility from external influences."
