Google pays publishers so that SI features in news draw on their texts.
According to Google's blog, under this licensing program the company pays publications for delivery and use of enhanced content for new SI features: article overviews on publishers' pages in Google News and customizable audio briefings, with source attribution and direct links. The program began last year; among the first participants were The Washington Post and The Washington Examiner; local outlets, including Post and Courier and the Texas Tribune, have joined them.
