Google DeepMind and Singapore's government build a Gemma-based model that detects scam conversations on the device

SI protection against scammers can work right on the phone, without sending your conversations to anyone.
The system has two stages: a lightweight classifier filters messages, then a fine-tuned Gemma model analyzes the course of the conversation and warns before any financial loss. Everything runs on the device, so, as the authors describe it, neither the government nor Google has access to users' conversations. Training used anonymized scam data in an isolated environment at GovTech Singapore. According to the blog, scams account for more than half of reported crime in Singapore, and losses since 2019 exceed S$4 billion. The launch will be phased, through apps that citizens install.
