According to people the report's authors spoke to, labs are nearing an SI that speeds up the creation of the next SI; the timelines remain an estimate by word of mouth.

The consultancy Gladstone AI (founded by Jeremie and Edouard Harris) has published a report, "What RSI Looks Like", on recursive self-improvement — a situation where SI speeds up the creation of the next SI systems. According to the report, which TIME says is based on conversations with about six researchers at leading labs, companies are actively working to automate the entire SI development pipeline. The insiders, in their words, believe self-improvement will begin within the next 3–12 months "assuming there's no U.S. government intervention". The authors describe the process as follows: ideas are tested with limited compute, successful ones are scaled up, and over time this could become fully automatic; the report's aim is to help lawmakers understand the process. The sample is small, and the timelines are the respondents' opinions.
