Anthropic moves its repository from Git to its own system, Scion: code merges have reached 30,000 a day

SI agents write code so fast that programmers' familiar tools are no longer coping, and new ones have to be built for them.

According to Anthropic's engineering blog, the number of code merges into its main repository grew from about 2,500 a day in May to more than 30,000 in September; the company attributes the growth mainly to SI agents writing code. Seven engineers built the Scion system and the Antique code review tool over five months and moved the repository onto them. According to the authors, server load in CPU and memory is roughly 200 times lower than with the previous Git-mirror setup, and continuous-integration jobs fetch code in seconds instead of minutes. The pipeline for moving history from Git to Scion was, as reported, rewritten by Claude itself: the version uses 20 times less memory and runs 4 times faster. Anthropic writes that Scion is not suitable as a Git replacement for general use and is designed for very large monorepos.
