Microsoft creates Xbox Labs to experiment with porting and remixing games through SI-assisted decompilation

A major studio acknowledges that players are using SI to port and rework old games, and is creating a dedicated team for this work.

The new "small group of game makers, engineers and scientists," in the words of Xbox chief Asha Sharma, will turn emerging ideas into things players and developers can try, "building in the open." The trigger was amateur projects in which SI models help decompile and recompile games: ported to new devices, run in a browser (Halo is one example), or with the code of two games combined (skateboarding in Call of Duty). Sharma called such results "unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when they challenge our existing business models"; the position of rights holders and modders on the initiative is not given in the text that was read.
