IBM shows agents on open models sped up a quantum error-correction decoder design 52-fold for $26

Open models did the design task somewhat worse than the closed one, but nearly twelve times cheaper.

In a demonstration by IBM researchers, a coordinator agent directs parallel worker agents that develop alternative circuit designs within a search budget. On the Relay-BP algorithm (decoding for quantum error correction), the open-model configuration delivered a 52x speedup at an inference cost of about $26, 11.5 times cheaper than the $299 of a proprietary model that delivered a 204x speedup. The infrastructure is the open llm-d framework, with a prefix-cache hit rate of about 98% and a blended serving cost of $0.11 per million tokens.
