US regulator NHTSA begins reviewing a complaint that Tesla robotaxis speed in school zones

A regulator is checking whether driverless taxis keep to the speed limit near schools; there are no conclusions yet.

According to The Next Web, NHTSA has opened a review of a defect petition alleging that Tesla robotaxis exceeded the posted speed limit in active school zones with their automated driving systems engaged. About 1,000 model-year 2026 vehicles (Robotaxi, Model Y and Cybercab) are covered; the document records no crashes, injuries or deaths. In the outlet's assessment, the evidence is still thin: an unnamed petitioner attached three video links, and the petition was received on 23 September. The same vehicles are already being examined in a separate NHTSA inquiry into how Tesla certified the Cybercab; speed is also named as an obstacle to approval of Tesla's driver-assistance system in the EU.
