A chipmaker is moving in on an open-model lab, and the outcome of the talks will show whether such models stay independent.

According to the Financial Times, as relayed by Bloomberg and Techmeme, Nvidia is in talks to acquire the US startup Reflection AI, which develops open-weight models, or to increase its investment in it. According to the sources, the deal may be structured as an "acquihire" — hiring the team — to avoid antitrust scrutiny. By the same reports, Nvidia has already invested $800 million in Reflection. These reports include no confirmation from the companies themselves.
