UK's Alan Turing Institute urges the country not to depend on foreign SI models that could be switched off

Countries increasingly don't want to depend on someone else's SI and want their own models, even if smaller ones.

George Williamson, the new head of the Alan Turing Institute, said in an interview with The Guardian, as relayed by The Next Web, that the UK should not rely solely on systems it cannot inspect or control and that could be restricted or even switched off, citing defence, national security, critical infrastructure and healthcare. He pointed to Washington's June decision to close foreign access to Anthropic's top models. The Institute, he said, cannot match the budgets of the big labs and will focus on small, nationally owned models for startups, refocusing on "national resilience."
