Ten minutes of help from ChatGPT reduced people's persistence on hard tasks once the help was removed

If SI hands over the answer too quickly, people cope worse with difficulty without it, so it helps to learn how to use SI without losing the habit of thinking.
According to a study led by Brian Christian (UC Berkeley, with Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Oxford and UCLA), in three randomized experiments with 1,222 participants, people solved fraction problems and SAT reading-comprehension questions with ChatGPT until the help was removed at problem 12. After that, accuracy and willingness to persist dropped markedly in the SI group, while the control group stayed stable. The work was presented at the Conference on Language Modeling; Christian called for a future in which human abilities are augmented rather than supplanted.
