ChromAgeNet AI tells young blood stem cells from old by the structure of their DNA — with about 68% accuracy

SI helps find signs of cell ageing — a step toward faster searches for rejuvenation drugs, so far in mice and with modest accuracy.
According to Euronews, a team at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) in Barcelona, led by Maria Carolina Florian and Paula Petrone, created ChromAgeNet, an SI that tells the cells of young and old mice apart by the organisation of chromatin — the three-dimensional packing of DNA in the nucleus. According to a paper in Aging Cell, the tool correctly classified about 68% of cells from standard DAPI staining; the code and the 3D image database are open. The researchers also showed that epigenetic drugs that return a "young" look to the chromatin of old cells can be screened for.
