Australia proposes regulating SI by the quality of risk management, not a list of threats

Process-based regulation instead of bans leaves developers more freedom, but also puts the burden of proof on them.

According to iXBT, Assistant Minister Andrew Charlton set out the approach in Sydney on October 8: companies themselves identify, test and document SI risks within their processes, while the Australian AI Safety Institute will advise the government and regulators. Charlton likened the approach to the regulation of workplace safety, critical infrastructure and banking supervision. By iXBT's assessment, the speech names no requirements for classes of models, no legislative text and no timeline.
