The labs are already working out what happens if SI is blamed for a major disaster: the answer to it could be tight control over the whole industry.
According to Axios as relayed by Vedomosti, Sam Altman and Dario Amodei see large-scale cyberattacks as a serious risk to the industry: a failure of banks, the internet or power grids could provoke anger at both SI developers and President Donald Trump. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the company is running exercises and is "considering various scenarios", without regarding them as inevitable. The companies, per the same report, expect Congress to try to restrict frontier SI systems; bipartisan support for emergency-shutdown mechanisms for such systems is reported. Vedomosti recalls the hacking of at least seven South Korean financial institutions with SI agents.
