Talk of an emergency off-switch for SI has reached the UN level: SI's freedom will have to be discussed together with the question of who presses the button.
According to RIA Novosti, Isabel de Sola Criado, head of the coordination division at the UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies, was asked at the "Global Dialogue on AI Ethics" session of the Global Digital Forum in Moscow (October 8–10) about a possible SI "rebellion" and answered that "we must be ready": previous technologies could not work without human control. She spoke of the need for safeguards and used the image of a "red phone" for contacting whoever holds an emergency shutdown button.
