Labs are building relationships with the future White House early, and critics see an attempt to influence regulation.
According to Fortune, Anthropic is launching a "presidential engagement" effort and hiring a political programs lead (the job posting lists $295–345 thousand a year) who will brief candidates on SI policy, prepare company executives for political conversations and oversee funding of its political committee. The goal, per the posting, is that every serious candidate and elected official in both parties understands the technology and the case for governing it well. Bruce Freed of the Center for Political Accountability, as quoted by Fortune, called it an effort aimed at shaping or staving off regulation; Senator Alex Padilla said education and influence are not the same thing.
