Legal pressure on SI training is growing: another major publisher lawsuit puts the data that models are built on into question.

According to unite.ai, USA Today Co. and 18 affiliated newspapers sued OpenAI in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York on October 8, seeking more than $250 million. The plaintiffs allege that OpenAI trained its GPT models on hundreds of thousands of their articles without permission, including by ignoring paywalls, removed copyright information, and post-trained the models to summarize articles in a way that substitutes for the originals. The complaint, as the article describes it, cites internal messages from OpenAI staff saying the models "memorize the training data". Seven OpenAI entities are named as defendants.
