A developer used Claude to write free open-source alternatives to Photoshop, Premiere and an office suite

One person with SI reproduces programs that hundreds of engineers once built, and the barrier to entry in software development is falling.

According to CNews, a programmer working alone wrote free alternatives to Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom, InDesign and other Adobe programs in Rust with Claude's help; Photocraft version 0.3.0 weighs about 62 MB, the code is open on GitHub, and the author says he did not use Adobe source code. According to The Register, the ArtCraft project added alternatives to Word, Excel and PowerPoint; the word processor is in pre-alpha and, in the outlet's estimate, close to 62% feature parity. Lawyer Neil Brown told The Register that such rewrites may be challenged in court.
