Meta's Oversight Board warns: independent SI safety committees are pointless without real power

If safety committees are given the right to stop a model, SI gets one more "off switch", and powerful models will wait for someone else's permission.
Members of Meta's Oversight Board, which reviews the company's moderation decisions, warned SI companies setting up independent safety committees that such bodies must have real authority to be useful. The warning came after the White House Accord on Super Intelligence announced last week. In the board members' view, without the ability to influence company decisions, committees risk becoming an ineffective oversight mechanism. NBC News calls the board the longest-running experiment in independent oversight in the tech industry.
