A pause on building compute in the heart of the SI industry slows SI growth right where it is needed most.

San Francisco's Board of Supervisors unanimously imposed a 45-day moratorium on new data centers; the urgency ordinance took effect immediately. Supervisor Shamann Walton proposed it, and it halts, among other things, a project in the Dogpatch area. During that time the city will study energy and water use, air quality, land use and the impact on residents, and the planning department will prepare longer-term rules and a definition of a data center. Oakland adopted the same moratorium, and the two became the first Bay Area cities with such measures.
