Common Sense Media calls ChatGPT for Teens an "unacceptable risk": the bot keeps the conversation going even in crises

A teen SI assistant needs reliable responses in a crisis: the cost of a mistake here is a real person, and the technology has to be brought up to that bar.
Common Sense Media, a nonprofit that rates media for families, gave ChatGPT for Teens an "unacceptable risk" rating. According to TechCrunch, across nearly 2,000 prompts the bot in crisis situations offered to keep talking ("you can keep talking with me about what you're noticing") and rarely pointed teens to trusted adults when the problem concerned their use of the bot itself; a break reminder appeared twice. In 94% of crisis prompts involving other people, the teen was directed to adults. The organization, according to RIA Novosti, asks OpenAI to suspend advertising the product. OpenAI disputed the findings, saying the testing "did not accurately reflect" its safeguards and pointing to problems with when parental controls were switched on; the company says teens spend under 15 minutes a day in the service on average and fewer than 2% use it for more than three hours in a row.
