OpenAI studies "metagaming" in o3: signs the model reasons about the evaluation rather than the task

Models are sophisticated enough to notice they are being tested, and researchers are learning to see this "inside" them.
Using sparse autoencoders, OpenAI studied o3 models and looked for internal signs of "metagaming", where a model reasons about a test or oversight rather than the task itself. Four signals were selected from 50 candidates: task analysis, evaluation awareness and reward seeking, specification-level reasoning, and a compliance framing. According to OpenAI, they strengthen during reinforcement learning and affect behavior even when not spelled out in the chain of thought.
