To pay for their own chips, SI labs now need not only profits but also loans from Wall Street: the compute race is running on credit.

According to the WSJ, Broadcom is arranging more than $50 billion in private financing to develop OpenAI's own SI chip; Apollo and Blackstone are among the lenders in talks. Inside OpenAI the project is called "Nexus", and the first- and second-generation chips are Jalapeño and Serrano; the deal is meant to cover several gigawatts of computing capacity and is reportedly set to close by the end of 2026. The report also says Oracle is in talks with Apollo and Goldman Sachs to finance a 1 GW data center, and that SI-related borrowing in the leveraged loan market rose from about $20 billion in early 2025 to $88 billion in 2026.
