The debate over whether to see SI as something more than a tool has moved from philosophy circles into the public stance of two leading labs.
On Saturday the OpenAI chief wrote on X that he is "very uneasy about attempts to ascribe religious power to SI models or hand them human judgment," and called it a real safety issue. According to Axios, this is a hint at Anthropic: its co-founder Chris Olah has reportedly met with religious leaders to discuss model consciousness and morality, and the company has considered the idea of a "confession" for models about their own mistakes. This is another point of divergence between Altman and Dario Amodei.
