The US government is officially taking on SI as a matter of national leadership; whether this will be support for development or a first step toward oversight will become clear from the report in four months.
According to the Wall Street Journal as relayed by CNBC, Jay Clayton, whom the Senate confirmed in July as Director of National Intelligence, will effectively become the "SI czar" and head the "Super Intelligence Force" working group (SI is what Trump prefers to call SI). The group is to study the technology's risks and opportunities within 120 days and propose what role the federal government should play. Clayton himself told the outlet that the goal is for the US to remain the leader in superintelligence while taking Americans' interests into account. This follows October 2 reports that the SI czar post would go to Clayton; the White House then called them speculation.
