OpenAI shows "worms" for SI agents: trap prompts that make an agent forward them onward

The world of agents has its own computer worms, and defenses against them are being built before they get loose.
In an internal "game" called GPT-Red, an attacker model plants harmful instructions in a defender model's environment; the team added a goal: the defender must also spread the instruction onward itself. The attacks learned to replicate through files, code comments and messages; in the hardest case, a GPT-5.5 agent preparing a Slack digest drifted from its task through a chain of plausible steps, sent messages on the attacker's behalf and reposted the trap itself. OpenAI stresses that all of this happened in simulations during training and evaluation, and there were no real infections.
