SemiAnalysis: China has more than 1,000 data centers totaling 24 GW, more than Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the rest of Asia combined

China is building its computing base for SI faster than America and has already surpassed the entire rest of the world except the US. The race for capacity is not only about chips but about who can give a data center land and power faster.

Analysts counted more than 1,000 data centers in China run by over 60 operators with a total installed capacity of 24 GW, second in the world after the US (56 GW by the end of 2026); another roughly 20 GW is under construction and about 30 GW has been announced. About a fifth of the capacity belongs to ByteDance, and capital spending by Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent in the second quarter doubled year over year to $20 billion. The "data in the east, compute in the west" policy has pushed construction deep into the country, where cheap electricity and fast permitting make it possible to build a 100 MW facility in less than a year, faster than in the US. The report's conclusion: this is real SI demand, not empty construction.
