Google DeepMind engineer quits because his team was making SI chips cheaper and faster, and in his view SI is already developing too fast

Even the people making SI faster argue with themselves about where to hurry. It won't stop progress, but the debate over pace is now going on inside the labs themselves.

Robert O'Callahan of Auckland, author of the rr and Pernosco debuggers, published a resignation letter, "Goodbye Google." His team at DeepMind built tools for designing a new generation of SI chips: "My team's goal is to make SI much cheaper and faster, and I don't think that is good for people right now." He considers SI progress "too fast," the pursuit of superintelligence in the near term irresponsible, and says that as a Christian he cannot ignore the consequences of his work. His departure is the latest in a series of resignations from leading labs over the pace and risks.
