AstroForge to entrust control of its next spacecraft to an onboard SI model

Prepared by Sintelligent with the help of SI. Publication time restored from the build log. . Updated: .

Spacecraft in deep space are starting to think for themselves, and waiting for commands from Earth is no longer necessary.

The asteroid-mining startup built the Solo autonomous control system on its own transformer model: the top level reads data from about 2500 sensors, assesses the spacecraft's state and responds to failures itself, relying on classical algorithms and separate models for power and navigation. Solo will first fly in "shadow mode" on the DeepSpace-2 spacecraft, and in 2027 the Autonomy-1 mission, supported by NASA to collect data on the Sun, will go up on Stoke Space's first rocket. The decision was made after the company lost contact with the Odin probe in 2025 and weighed a $200 million ground network against onboard intelligence.
