A startup founded by Caltech researchers and led by professor Babak Hassibi has released Bonsai 2 27B, a "ternary" version of Qwen3.8 27B in which each weight takes one of three values, +1, −1 or 0, instead of 16 bits. The model is 9–10 times smaller than the original and retains about 98% of its benchmark results (the March version retained 95%). The company has raised $22.25 million from Khosla Ventures and others and promises models with hundreds of billions of parameters in the coming months.
