Baseten, Hugging Face and Goodfire team up so that open models can't be "unlocked" so easily

The open-model community is itself looking for a way to stay open and still be safe, which is the best argument against bans on open weights.
Baseten's research division, Base Labs, announced at TechCrunch Disrupt a safety standard for open models: Base Labs will develop the training and monitoring methods, Goodfire will add interpretability so that protection is "built into" the architecture, and Hugging Face the distribution platform. The reason is the abliteration technique, which strips protective restrictions out of open models: there are already more than 6 thousand such "unlocked" models on Hugging Face.
