Periodic Labs embeds a trillion-parameter model directly into physical labs, and it beats Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra at analyzing X-ray patterns

SI is no longer just reading scientific papers and is starting to learn directly from experiments: labs that improve themselves will speed up the discovery of new materials.
The Periodic Neon model (1 trillion parameters) was fine-tuned and run through reinforcement learning on fresh data from the company's own materials science labs, closing the "experiment, model, experiment" loop. According to Periodic Labs, in X-ray diffraction analysis, a task that used to require hours of expert work, Neon outperforms Claude Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra. The company calls this a first step toward autonomous discovery in materials science.
